I haven’t played the first game, but the plot of House of Da Vinci 2 seems to be a continuance of the original game’s story. Not having knowledge of the first game didn’t affect my enjoyment of the puzzles, but maybe I would have been more invested in the story if I was already familiar with the setup and characters. This is a very familiar opening in gaming terms and typically it isn’t long before an opportunity to escape presents itself.
Travel around corners, and the camera swings with you. The camera movements add great dynamism to the presentation, swinging and swirling around mechanical objects as they open up and expand, or swooping over great heights (hopefully, you don’t suffer from vertigo) as you zipline from a balcony across a courtyard, where! The core of the game is something akin to an endless runner, as a little girl makes her way from the frozen winter lands to the summer ocean in a homemade car. Along the way she’ll encounter pits full of razor-sharp icicles, collapsing bridges, and plenty more hazards that are, frankly, far too dangerous for a child to be handled alone. I partner up with a local wordsmith, a friendly beast-man, who constructs the vehicles and equipment that I need for my journey. Each run of Summer Catchers requires me to hop into my ride, load it with various pieces of kit, and drive as far as.
I can until I run out of the doodads that let me avoid the hazards in my path. There’s a shield that blocks incoming hazards, a rocket that helps me race up large hills, and a booster that lets me jump over pitfalls. Each area has variations on similar obstacles, including the totem poles that somebody has built absolutely everywhere for some reason. Other times, you’ll take damage anyway because you weren’t quite quick enough on the draw. COOKIES MUST DIE
The gameplay follows suit, with action that is so fast-paced and over-the-top you’ll be glad it offers you the ability to slow downtime. Triggering this ability makes it much easier to target your cookie-shaped enemies and send a deadly attack in their direction. It’s a surprisingly entertaining game that only gets better as you master the control scheme. In my brief experience, though, it’s actually even more fluid, fast-paced, and frankly bonkers than Devolver’s hit actioner.
Some might struggle with the touchscreen controls, but they haven’t yet given me too much trouble. What was always clear, though, is that Cookies Must Die has a ton of personality, especially in its sense of humor and character designs. Without the slow-motion feature, it would be nearly impossible to see what’s going on. Regardless, the action is always a treat to look at and fits perfectly with the crazy tone the game is trying to achieve. These IAPs are mainly useful for purchasing a secondary in-game currency called Gems.
THE LAST REMNANT
The seemingly infallible Sony had stumbled out of the gate with the PlayStation 3. Microsoft had surged in early to considerable success in the West. Nintendo had scored a massive out-of-nowhere hit with its unusual Wii system and was riding high atop both the console and handheld markets. Apple had brought out some weird mobile phone that seemed like it could play some games. No two regions had the same preferences, causing utter chaos for publishers.
And Square Enix was arguably the poster child for that chaos. This sweeps you up into the story of the remnants and the various people who lust after their power. Deadlocking an enemy union is sort of like tanking in the MMOG world, and on larger targets, it’s possible to have multiple unions deadlocked simultaneously. It’s a tactic available to you and to your enemy, so when moving into a fight you’ll need to be conscious of the makeup of each of your unions.
